What's
one of the secrets to Vitamin C antioxidant health?
Eat eight plump, ripe, juicy, sweet strawberries. Eight
strawberries provide 140 percent of the recommended take
of Vitamin C, and one cup of strawberries only has 55 calories
for those of you getting in shape for summer. Right now
in May, April showers have brought new ripe berries. Strawberries
ripen before any other fruit in spring, which is one reason
May is National Strawberry Month.
Many of us remember going to U-Pick farms or venturing into
the woods to eat wild strawberries, with more strawberries
eaten than actually picked and put in pie or smoothies.
While there's nothing sweeter or more wholesome than a strawberry
eaten in the sunshine on a farm, you'll want to save some
berries for your morning smoothie, pie, fruit salad, or
even spinach salad. A double dose of health comes from our
Strawberry Spinach Salad, since May is also Healthy Vision
Month (see article below).
You can find strawberries throughout the United States and
Canada. Every state in America grows strawberries, and in
Canada, you'll find the red ripe antioxidant powerhouses
in every province. You may have to defer to a moose or Canadian
goose or bears, who have always enjoyed the strawberry health
secret in woods and fields. It's a sure bet the Beatles
enjoyed good health as they sang of "Strawberry Fields
Forever."
In homage to the Beatles (and National Strawberry Month),
you can make your own Strawberry Fields Forever Smoothie
from our recipes, using juicers such as the L'Equip 509
Visor Natural Processor. LivingRight's juicers and blenders
are perfect for strawberries, giving you maximum nutrition
and taste. You can even make your own berry good yogurt
with our Miracle Yogurt Maker model ME72.
Don't want to waste all the strawberries you've picked,
but by now feel you can't look at so much as a seed? Consider
freezing or dehydrating the berries. Use dehydrated "strawberry
chips" as a snack. Much healthier and tastier than
commercially processed fruit snacks and roll-ups!
So whether you call them des fraises or unas fresas, strawberries
rule this month. They're one small step you can take for
your health.
